Week Nine!

What did you learn this week? This week we began by reviewing what we talked about last week which was mutations. Then we were introduced to our new topic which was natural selection and evolution. We looked at many examples of natural selection and evolution. It was interesting to take a deeper look into natural selection and evolution. We were able to look at the NGSS website and look at different lessons that relate to evolution. We next talked about technology and its importance inside the classroom. Personally I believe the three most important forms of technology in the class are computers, speakers, and a projector. I think these are important because they are all equally inclusive to students. Are you able to relate what you learned to what you already knew? I was able to relate all of my learning to what I already knew. I felt like I had not heard of these things in a really long time so it was a really good refresher for me but once I had heard it my brain was refreshed and I...

Week Eight!

What did you learn this week?     First, in class, we began looking at our baby lab and discussing our babies and the questions asked on the lab packet as a whole group discussion. It was interesting to see what everyone's babies looked like and the similarities and differences that they had. We also began to talk about genotypes and phenotypes. We talked about the difference between the two. A genotype is the genetic combination that determines the feature while phenotype is the observable feature expressed. Later, we talked about inherited versus acquired traits. We then did some simulations to help us learn how DNA and genes work. We later did an activity sheet called let's make superhero where we got to mess around with mutations and such to help build a superhero. Are you able to relate what you learned to what you already knew?     I feel like I did not know much about phenotype and genotype before we discussed it at the beginning of class. I definitely did not...

Week Seven!

What did you learn this week? This week in class, we talked a lot about DNA mRNA, and genetics. We did lots of activities and watched lots of videos that helped us to understand how DNA works. We talked about the four different bases which are ATGC in DNA. The pairings are A and T, G and C, T and A, and C and G. In mRNA it is UTCG. They switch up a bit. DNA and mRNA can never be together though because they are two separate things. We made a DNA model out of candy which was cool to bring our learning to life in a sense. We later then got to do an activity where we flipped a coin to create a baby and it was interesting to see the dominant and recessive genes and how it sort of related because in real life there are on two outcomes like there was in the activity. Are you able to relate what you learned to what you already knew? I am able to relate all of this to what I already knew. I have previously learned all of this, although it was a really nice refresher for me. It was fun to do th...

Week Five!

What did you learn this week?     This week, we began by talking about the food chain and the ten percent rule. We as a group realized that there would need to be more producers than apex predators because the predators are getting little energy so there needs to be more producers. Then, we learned about the baby turtles. We talked about how humans and the environment can play a big part in the life cycles of different animals but we focused really on the baby turtles. We did an activity with a fortune teller game with a line graph to see how different human and environmental factors would predict the life span of our baby turtles. I thought it was fascinating to learn that only 0.1% of baby turtles actually make it to adulthood. It was interesting to learn this because I had no idea the survival rate was this low. We then did some worksheets about the baby turtles and about three-dimensional standards. Are you able to relate what you learned to what you already knew? ...
