Week Five!
What did you learn this week?
This week, we began by talking about the food chain and the ten percent rule. We as a group realized that there would need to be more producers than apex predators because the predators are getting little energy so there needs to be more producers. Then, we learned about the baby turtles. We talked about how humans and the environment can play a big part in the life cycles of different animals but we focused really on the baby turtles. We did an activity with a fortune teller game with a line graph to see how different human and environmental factors would predict the life span of our baby turtles. I thought it was fascinating to learn that only 0.1% of baby turtles actually make it to adulthood. It was interesting to learn this because I had no idea the survival rate was this low. We then did some worksheets about the baby turtles and about three-dimensional standards.
Are you able to relate what you learned to what you already knew?
I was able to relate some of what I learned to what I knew. I knew that human and environmental factors play a key role in the survival of different species. I believe humans can make a big difference in how they interact with different species. The only thing that I felt was new to me was the survival rate of the baby turtles
How can you apply what you've learned to your teaching in the future?
I will definitely make sure to talk about the baby turtles with my students because I think it is important and the baby turtles make it interesting to the students. Overall, this week was fascinating to me and I will use these activities we did in class in my future classroom.
Hi Addy! I also found it fascinating that only 0.1% of sea turtles actually make it to adulthood. This was something I never knew until lab. These activities also helped me to realize the big impact that humans have on different species, this is something that my future students can also take away from activities like these.
