Week Thirteen

Greenhouse Gasses - Albedo and Atmosphere are some of the reason that impacts global warming - They are able to dig into glaciers, so they are able to look at the history of it. They have been able to look at ice around 8,000 years old - Most radiation is absorbed by the Earth's surface and warms it - If we had no greenhouse gases, our Earth would be very cold - It is bad when we have too many in our atmosphere

I read the article titled " The State of Climate" by   Emily Martin . This article focused on Iowa and how it is affected by climate change. Some important facts from the article. Iowa is considered one of the most altered states.  " Over the 20th century Iowa’s average temperature increased by only 0.2 °F, and over the last 30 years the average rose by 0.8 °F from the 20th-century average — far less than the global temperature rise of over twice as much, 1.9 °F. A closer look reveals that our daily maximum temperatures in summer have actually gone down over the last 30 years by 1.1 °F."  This is interesting because you would think that it would be the opposite. That it would be increasing by more, and you would think that our summers are getting hotter, not cooler. One thing that is dangerous that the article says is,  " Iowa is getting wetter. Weather records confirm this and further reveal that the statewide rainfall in the April-May-June period now has gon...

Week Eleven: Climate Change

Image
Primary Points: The docu was ten years ago, and they were seeing lots of change. I feel as though there has to be even more change now. People won't change because climate change is bringing in money.  Major Issues: Sea level is rising, carbon footprint, use of fossil fuels What questions do you want us to teach you: I want to learn about what countries are using different renewable energy resources and if that is working well for them or what they have noticed. How would you like to be taught: Using visuals because I feel like words do not have as much of an impact as photos and images will. The evolution of the Antarctic Amery Ice Shelf was very interesting because they look like 2 completely different things. Is the goldfinch endangered, and how do we know? The precipitation in Iowa is increasing, which increases the humidity and heat. The heat makes it difficult for animals to sustain health and can even lead to death. Due to these factors the goldfinch bird is at risk.

Week Ten

To begin lab today we took a formative assessment. Then, we talked about the sweater article from last week; it was interesting to hear my peer's ideas on it. We then moved into discussing the law of superposition, which is basically just the principle of knowing the relative age of each rock layer. We did a fun "Who Dunnit" activity where we used the law of superposition to figure out who stole the last cookie. We then looked at a geologic version to try and figure out which came first. We then got to play around with the microscope, and it was cool to look at different things. I learned a lot about how things look close up versus far away. I also learned a lot about how to implement the law of superposition when looking at different things and I am going to try and use and implement it more often.
